Joel, Adriana, Naomi, & Diego Avina
For over 20 years, our family was involved in the ministries of Iglesia Bautista Emanuel. As our children grew, our journey took a new turn when our son Diego was diagnosed with autism. He attended children’s Sunday school classes for a time, but eventually, the church was no longer able to offer a class that met his special needs. Sundays became increasingly difficult for us because Diego did not want to attend church. There was nothing for him to do and there was little to engage or interest him.
Several years passed this way until one day, we saw a post on Facebook from Meagan announcing the launch of a ministry at Mt. Gilead for children with special needs. We were overjoyed to learn that such a ministry was beginning.
I vividly remember speaking with Meagan at the clinic, sharing how hard it had become for us to attend church regularly. We were torn and unsure about changing churches, yet longing for a place where our whole family could grow spiritually. Eventually, we made the decision to visit Mt. Gilead, and it turned out to be one of the best days for Diego and for us.
From the moment we arrived, Diego was happy and excited. He couldn’t wait to see Meagan and begin this new chapter. Since then, we’ve been attending faithfully. Diego reminds us multiple times throughout the week that we’re going to Mt. Gilead on Sunday. When I ask him what he loves most about church, he says “Meagan, play with my friends, and learn about Jesus.”
A few months ago, Diego was baptized—a deeply meaningful moment for our family and for him personally. We are profoundly grateful to our Lord for placing this ministry on the hearts of Mt. Gilead’s leadership. Our prayer is that God continues to bless them with wisdom, compassion, and love as they serve children with special needs.
This ministry means the world to us. Diego is learning about God in an environment where he is understood, supported, and truly cared for.
